Though this practice still remains a key aspect of the SHS system, in recent years schools are mostly classified as categories A, B, C through to F.

People refer to Grade A Schools to mean the category A senior high schools, a list which is made up of the best and most performing senior high schools in Ghana. These schools are also not just considered the best in terms of their WASSCE performance but also based on their facilities, infrastructure, and teaching-learning environments.

It is also important to know that the categorization of all senior high schools in Ghana does not mean one school is far better than the other.

For example, Category F and G senior high schools refer to Private Senior High Schools and Private Technical & Vocational Schools in Ghana.

Public or Government Senior High Schools falls within Category A, Category B, and Category C, where the notion of the best senior high school could be exemplified.

As for 2020, the GES includes Public Technical & Vocational Second Cycle Schools into Categories A, B, and C.
