Rap music is dynamic and has evolved over the years. However, one of the requisites of rap music is its ability to be profound and laden with heavy punchlines.
This is the integral component of the Hip-hop culture so a rapper who has this specialty is held in high esteem. Punchline in rap culture means the use of similes, metaphors, wordplay, and double entendres in lyrics. It’s against this background that we want to talk about some notable Ghanaian rap songs that have this element.
Warning was released in 2015 and produced by the legendary Ghanaian music producer, Hammer of the Last Two. The song is by all standard one of the best Ghanaian rap songs of all time. The wordplay, timing and above all punchline gave the heavy punchlines put the song in a different realm. The song placed Teephlow at the echelon of the rap game in Ghana and help him establish his brand. The song also featured Sarkodie and we all know the different layers of his ingenuity he added to the song.
Perhaps we can safely say Obrafuor’s ability to use heavy punchlines in his songs is the main reason why he’s regarded as the best Ghanaian rapper of all time, well, before the emergence of Sarkodie. His Yaanom song set him on the path of greatness. The metaphors, similes, and other literary devices the rap executioner employed on the song is just unparalleled.
The list wouldn’t be complete without the name of Lord Kenya. The former award-winning rapper who’s now an evangelist spat bars in Enyom No and this makes the song one of the best Hiplife songs of all time.
Evergreen music duo, R2Bees burst onto the scene with this explosive song Yawa Girl. This song largely contributed to the group’s success. Yawa Girl is indeed epic.
Sarkodie should definitely be on this list. His song, Hustling is one of the best songs he has ever composed. The song relatively unknown but it doesn’t stop us from recognizing it as one of the best Ghanaian rap songs with the best punchlines.
