Following the reopening of school for final year students effective June 15, the National Council of Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) has petitioned the government to authorize students to use phones in schools for now in order for parents and guardians to stay in touch with their children.

The President of the PTA Council, Alexandar Danso empahised that its necessary since the Education Ministry has banned parents from visiting their wards when schools reopens.

In the view of Alexandar Danso, students when permitted to use mobile phones when schools resume would be a great way keep their parents updated about their welfare.

He admitted the government’s decision for banning parents from visiting their wards is in the right direction, adding that “because if you allow parents to be going at this time of the COVID-19 outbreak [it won’t be the best], Mr. Danso said, as quoted by citinewsroom

He petitioned that “if they are not permitting parents to visit, at least they should authorised the students to use feature phones only for calls and SMS so that they will be able to communicate with their parents”.

He added that “the parents staying in one place without seeing your child for 11 weeks will problematic.”

President Akufo-Addo delivering his 10th nation’s address on Sunday May 31 declared the reopening of schools for only final year students as the country gradually ease the COVID-19 restrictions.

He said this is to enable the final year students complete their academic year and prepare for their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) now Ghana Exams.

The Minister for Education, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh addressing the press on Tuesday added that the students will be in school for a period of 11 weeks.

He on behalf of the government announced that no parent will be permitted to visit their wards within the reopening period. This, he said, is to limit external human to human contact.
