THE BIG SIX OF GHANA

The Big Six were six leaders of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), one of the leading political parties in the British colony of the Gold Coast, known after independence as Ghana. Here are some essential details of the big six:

• Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, he was the prime minister of Ghana and first president of Ghana. He was a Ghanaian nationalist who led the Gold Coast’s drive for independence from Britain and presided over its emergence as the new nation of Ghana. He was born on the 21^st of September 1909 and died on the 27^th of April 1972.
• Ebenezer Ako-Adjei, he was one of the founding members of the UGCC. He was born on the 16^th of June 1916 and died on the 14^th of January 2002. He played a key role in the attainment of Ghana’s independence.

• Edward Akufo-Addo, he was also a founding member of the UGCC, a Chief Justice of Ghana and president of Ghana. He was born on the 26^th of June 1906 and died on the 17^th of July 1979.

• Joseph Boakye Danquah, he was also a founding member of the UGCC. He was born on the 21^st of December 1895 and died on the 4^th of February 1965.

• Emmanuel Obetsebi Lamptey, he was also a finding member of the UGCC and a political activist in the British colony of the Gold Coast. He was born on the 26^th of April and died on 29^th of January 1963.

• William Ofori Atta, he was popularly called “Paa Willie”, he was one of the founding members of the UGCC. He was born on the 10^th of October 1910 and died on the 14^th of July 1988,
