THE BIG SIX OF GHANA

The Big Six were six leaders of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), one of the leading political parties in the British colony of the Gold Coast, known after independence as Ghana. Here are some essential details of the big six:

  • Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, he was the prime minister of Ghana and first president of Ghana. He was a Ghanaian nationalist who led the Gold Coast’s drive for independence from Britain and presided over its emergence as the new nation of Ghana. He was born on the 21st of September 1909 and died on the 27th of April 1972.
  • Ebenezer Ako-Adjei, he was one of the founding members of the UGCC. He was born on the 16th of June 1916 and died on the 14th of January 2002. He played a key role in the attainment of Ghana’s independence.

 

  • Edward Akufo-Addo, he was also a founding member of the UGCC, a Chief Justice of Ghana and president of Ghana. He was born on the 26th of June 1906 and died on the 17th of July 1979.

 

  • Joseph Boakye Danquah, he was also a founding member of the UGCC. He was born on the 21st of December 1895 and died on the 4th of February 1965.

 

  • Emmanuel Obetsebi Lamptey, he was also a finding member of the UGCC and a political activist in the British colony of the Gold Coast. He was born on the 26th of April and died on 29th of January 1963.

 

  • William Ofori Atta, he was popularly called “Paa Willie”, he was one of the founding members of the UGCC. He was born on the 10th of October 1910 and died on the 14th of July 1988,
