Each year the Ghana Education Service releases what is called the school's register, which contains some vital information to help among other things, B.E.C.E candidates in their selection of senior high schools of choice.

The register contains all categories of SHS both public and private, their locations, courses offered, accommodation status, and whether it is a mixed or single-sex school. The focus of this article is to give the number of senior high schools currently in Ghana as officially recognized by the Ghana Education Service.

There are a total of 1182 Senior High Schools in Ghana (both public & private SHS) as of 2021 per the GES schools register for 2020. This number includes purely technical and vocational institutions.

Break down of the number of Senior High Schools

• 675 are public or government SHS,
• 47 being Public Technical & Vocational second cycle Institutions.
• 308 Private Senior High Schools
• 152 Private Technical & Vocational second cycle institutions

GES 2020 Update Note:

• Technical & Vocational Institutions are now classified together with Senior High Schools into Categories A, B, and C
• Category D is all the 722 Public SHS (including Tech/Voc Institutes) with DAY option only
• Category E list all Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS) and Purely Technical/ Vocational Institutions courses
• Category F and G remains as the list of Private SHS and Private Technical/ Vocational Institutions respectively

It is also impressive to note that the government’s building of community day senior high schools has contributed significantly to the increase of the number, which also assures that more students get access and enjoy the free SHS as well.
