Single-sex has been probably one of the most debated topics when it comes to the selection of schools by junior high students.
This argument is mostly generated by perceptions and assumptions some parents have about it. To some extent, that argument still stands the chance of further scrutiny and discussion but Myshsrank.com has investigated the reasons for the formulation of these single-sex schools.
During the arrival of the various missionaries in Ghana to propagate the gospel it was found out that scarcely a minute number of girls of school-going age were actually in school.

The oldest girls' school in Ghana Wesley Girls senior high school was established in 1836 and founded by Mrs. Harriet Wrigley the wife of George Wrigley the second Methodist missionary to arrive in Ghana after the death of Rev. Joseph Rhodes. Mrs. Wrigley had the aim to give basic education and training to the young girls.
What she taught the girls were reading, writing, sewing, and religious practice and this was the foundation of the first girl's school. The culture of the Gold coasters at that time towards women was that they were supposed to end up in the kitchen and hence has limited merit in accessing education.
So as various missionaries came to the Gold coast now Ghana they saw that more needed to be done. The Catholics, Methodists, Presbyterians, and other religious bodies at their arrivals engaged in closing this gap and played a very pivotal role in encouraging girl-child education through the establishment of senior high schools.
