A total of 345 schools (private and public) in the country have recorded cases of the locally transmitted coronavirus since the mid-January 2021 school reopening, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) announced Sunday.

Speaking to journalist, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, said approximately 2,052 cases of the novel virus has been recorded in 345 private and public schools across the country.

“Since we reopened the schools, 345 schools have recorded cases. We have recorded a total of 2,052 cases in schools in the country. Our current active case number is 13,” the Director-General of the Health Service stated.

According to Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, the Volta Region has the highest number of recorded cases of the deadly coronavirus in schools as of now, while the Oti Region currently has the highest number of active cases.

“Volta Region has recorded the highest number with 189 cases. Oti has the highest number of active cases because their cases are quite recent, compared to the other cases. The North-East Region is the only region that has recorded no cases,” the Ghana Health Service (GHS) official explained.

President Nana Akufo-Addo mid-January this year announced for prospective students to return to school after the long closure of schools amid the unexpected outbreak of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
