In Ghana, there are more mixed senior high schools than the single-sexes, boys or girls SHS.
However, it has mostly been the case that top-ranking and well-performing senior high schools after each WASSCE are either Boy’s or Girl’s SHS.
In this article, we present to you the best mixed senior high schools in the Ashanti region based on WASSCE 2019 performance.
WASSCE 2020 school’s performance data is yet to be made available therefore we based this ranking on the 2019 WASSCE.

Bankoman Senior High School
Bankoman SHS has some interesting background with regards to its establishment. The school was established as a community day secondary school to provide education for students of Banko and its surrounding villages.
The school however collapsed on three occasions until 2012 when it was absorbed into the public senior high school’s system.
However, it was initially established in 2004. the school is situated on about 90 acres of land at Banko in the Sekyere Kumawu District of the Ashanti Region.
Courses offered by the school are General Arts, Business, Agriculture Science, Home Economics, Visual Arts, and General Science.
Sekyedumase Senior High/ Tech
Sekyedumase SHTS was established in the year 1991 located in the Ejura-Sekyedumase Municipal District. It is a mixed senior high school offering six SHS courses which include: General Arts, General Science, Visual Arts, Home Economics, Technical courses, and Business.
Tawheed Senior High School
Tawheed SHS was established in 2001 and is located in the Asokore-Mampong near the central mosque at Akwatia-Line in Kumasi. It is a co-educational institution with an average population of about 1500 students.
The school also falls in the Kumasi Metropolitan District and runs both day and boarding systems.
Courses offered include general Arts, Business, Visual Arts, Home Economics, and General Science.
Ghana Muslim Mission Senior High School
The school was established on 20th October 2008 to provide quality formal education to the ever-growing youth of Beposo and its environs. The school’s motto is “Knowledge and Humility in the Oneness of God”.
The Ghana Muslim Mission SHS is run both day and boarding system and offer SHS courses which include General Science, General Arts, Business, Home Science, and Visual Arts.
Some of the school’s achievements include 1st Position at the Sekyere Central SHS debate competition in 2018, 1st position in the Ashanti Regional SHS Volleyball competition of 2017, 1st Position at Sekyere Central SHS Cultural competition in 2016.
Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School
The school is a Catholic SHS that runs on two campuses. It is strategically located between Nkawie and Bibiani on the main road and about a 45-minute drive from Kumasi.
The school was established in the year 1991 as a co-educational institution and runs both a day and boarding systems. Like many senior high schools, the school offers General Science, Home Economics, General Science, Business, Agric Science, and Visual Arts.
Nyinahin Cath. SHS has an average population of about 2200 as of 2020. One of its achievements over the years is being 1st in the Independence Inter-School Debate Zonal in 2016 and 2018.
Ofoase Senior High Technical School
Ofoase SHTS was established in January 1991 as one of the community-based senior high schools in the Ashanti Region. The school operates as a coeducational institution with day and boarding facilities.
SHS courses offered include Agriculture Science, General Arts, General Science, Home Economics, and Technical.
The school as of 2020 has an average population of 1200 students comprising of first-year to third-year students. The school received the National Best ICT Teacher award in 2016 as one of its achievements.
Jacobu Senior High Technical School
JASTECH as they are called was established in September 1991 and operates as a co-educational institution for secondary school education. The school is located in the Amansie Central District.
The school initially was purely a Day and Hostel school until sometime in September 2012 when the boarding system was introduced.
As of 2020, it had an average population of 1700 students. SHS courses offered include General Science, General Arts, Technical, Home Economics, Visual Arts, and General Agriculture.
Mpasatia Senior High Technical School
Mpasiatia SHTS was established on 28th January 1991 as a mixed school located at Mpasatia, off the Abuakwa-Bibiani highway after Atwima Wiawso in the Ashanti Region.
The school has an average population of about 2700 as of 2020. Courses offered include Home Economics and Visual Arts.
Okomfo Anokye Senior High School
Okomfo Anokye SHS was established in 1964 as a co-educational institution that was set up as a community school. The school was once named Subri Secondary School after the Wiamoase stool.
However, on 22nd October 1964, the school’s name was changed to Okomfo Anokye Secondary School, just a few days after it was established on 15th October. It was the first secondary school to be established in the now Sekyere South District.
Interestingly, the school was first housed in the Presbyterian and Salvation Army Churches with the two missions managing the school until it was absorbed by the government during the 1970/1971 academic year.
The school’s average population as of 2020 was about 4000 students. SHS courses offered include General Science, Business, General Arts, Home Economics, Visual Arts, and Agric Science.
Pentecost Senior High School, Kumasi
The school is a mission school established in 2006 and owned by the Pentecost Church. The Government of Ghana absorbed the school into the public SHS system in the 2017/2018 academic year.
Pentecost SHS Kumasi is located in Breman, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region. It has one of the largest classrooms of 50, a computer lab, and a library.
As of 2020, it had an average population of 1300 students. Courses offered include General Arts, Visual Arts, Home Economics, and Business.
